This Week's Program:
This week we will hear from Jill Johnson from the Wayzata School District. Jill will discuss the new Great Expectations initiative IOCP and the school districts of Wayzata and Orono have started. The goal of Great Expectations is to get the greater community, schools, faith groups, organizations, families, etc. to come together to help kids succeed in school and then life.
Last Week's Program:
The meeting began with an invocation by Jason Cardwell (thank you Jason for filling in) followed by the card game by Russ Carlson (no one won the card game again so it moves onto next week - seventeen cards left), and trivia by Eric Blank (welcome back Eric!). Then President Juetten made announcements starting with answers to the riddles and questions: 1) He is playing monopoly; 2) One ; and 3) When you change the first letter to capital the pronunciation changes. Look at last weeks bulletin for the questions (my way of getting you to look at the bulletins).
We had no guests today. Remember the membership contest - 1 points for bringing a perspective member to meeting, 5 points if that person joins and 3 points if you get a person to join without coming to a meeting. Steve Beachler, Glen Norton and Steve Juetten all have 1 point.
The meeting then was turned over to member Sharon Sund. She spent several minutes introducing the concept of "Caring Economy." Businessdictionary.com defines "Caring Economy" as, an economic system in which genuine caring for people and nature is the top priority. Caring economics are currently found in Nordic nations like Finland, Norway and Sweden. She started by asking the question of members, "what defines prosperity?" This prompted a number of different comments from members (happiness, providing for family, being better off then the past, etc.). Sharon then went on to discuss how some employers are using caring economic ideas to attract and retain employees. It was clear that members had differing opinions and many were open to discussing the topic. Hopefully everyone got something out of the discussion and at least left thinking that we all need to continue to look at ways to improve ourselves and society. Thank you for listening.
President Juetten announced that our exchange student will be arriving on the August 17th at 1:45pm and that Jason Cardwell is looking for Rotarians interested in going to the airport to welcome him (contact Jason). Jason is also looking for a host family for the second and third periods of our students stay. See more information on the exchange student below.

Meeting Survey:
President Juetten provided results of the survey, recent action by the Board of Directors based on the survey and the next steps.
Results of the Survey:
1) How many meetings per month? 9 members said continue meeting every Thursday, 18 members said change to three meetings per month and 6 members suggested something different. Based on this the Board approved moving to three meetings starting in October (1st, 2nd and 3rd Thursdays). Along with this, on some of the "off" Thursdays - 4th and 5th (if a month has five) - we will plan some after work activities.
2) Meeting time (Noon or morning)? 19 members said continue at Noon and 15 members said change to a morning time (7 or 7:30 start). Based on this the Board approved staying a Noon club.
3) Location (stay and Crowne Plaza or look at other options)? 11 members said stay at Crowne Plaza and 25 members said let's look for a new less expensive location. Based on this, a "committee" of volunteer members will be spending the next couple of weeks looking into options. Thank you to those members that have volunteered: Peter Bartling, Jim Bird, Dwain Erickson, Ben Rischall, Sharon Sund, Jeff Wosje, Murray Death, Ricardo Ortizcazarin and James Williams. Updates will be provided at meetings and in future bulletins and at future meetings.
Fundraiser
Jim Crenna continues to work on the fundraiser and will provide periodic updates to everyone. The Parade is Saturday, September 26th this year. Those that have secured sponsors in the past need to secure them again and let Jim know. Jim continues to work on the grant price because our previous grand price is not available. Ben Rischall has agreed to be the small prices coordinator - please get gifts of ranging in size from $25 to over $100. Please contact Jim if you have any questions or ideas. Please thank Jim for all the work tha the does for the fundraiser!

Vice President/President Elect Request: Over the next several weeks I, along with the Board and Past Presidents, will be reaching out to a number of you to gauge your interest in becoming the Vice President/President Elect. Please spend some time thinking about the possibility and contact me if you have questions and interest. With the quality and experience of the current board and the number of engaged past presidents, there is no time like this year to start your Rotary leadership.
Heart Safe Plymouth: We have trained over 2,905 People and counting!
Please consider helping Norm, Russ, Don and Steve with Heart Safe events. Contact them or talk to them at meetings to find out when upcoming events are scheduled. They are doing great work, but can always use help from members.

Incoming Youth Exchange News:
The first Host Family for our inbound student Guan-Yu Chen coming this August from Taiwan has been secured. Jason Cardwell and Jill Kohler are still seeking two more host families to accommodate his year with us. Youth Exchange Officer Jason reports our incoming student is fluent in English. Jason and Jill have been extremely effective and instrumental in managing our Youth Exchange program for the Club. Thanks to them for their service! And please circulate this hosting opportunity to your friends and families in the Wayzata School District. Anyone who has hosted in the past can relate what a wonderful experience it can be. It would be wonderful if a Plymouth Rotarian would step up to host!
IOCP is Collecting Back-to-School Supplies.
Donations may be dropped off at IOCP from August 1-21, Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Wednesday's until 8 p.m. Most needed items are: Backpacks (large, solid colors); Wide/College Rule Spirals; Pocket Folders; Composition Notebooks; 3-Ring Binders (1 1/2 inch); Dry Erase Markers; Notebook Dividers; Wide/College Loose-leaf Paper; Graph Paper; Colored Pencils; Glue Sticks (no glue bottles); Scientific Calculators (TI-15, TI-108, TI-30X); and Graphing Calculators (TI-84).
