DISCOVER PLYMOUTH WILL OCCUR ON 4/23/22 FROM 9:00 AM TO 2:00 PM

PLYMOUTH ROTARY will have a booth staffed by John S. James, Peter, Steve B. and Norm. They will tell the people of the City of Plymouth and potential new members why they should join us and the great fun we have from  Heartsafe, and the rest of our activities. Of Course other volunteers are needed too, so please let us know if you can join this rowdy crew to tell people how grrreeaaat Plymouth Rotary Club is and why life is better because of it.

 In May, Fine Masters might well be checking Rotarians' excuses for non-attendance at this event to be sure they have have a properly signed excuse, signed by their parent, in cursive writing, in blue or black fountain pen.

Heart Safe Note:
Two Thursday evening trainings, May 19 and May 26, originally planned for the Public Safety Building, were double booked on the city’s room reservation system.  We have had to change our training locations for both trainings.

The Medicine Lake Conference Room in City Hall is our training location for Thursday, May 19th. Steve Marti’s suggestion here is that we do not announce a change in location for this training but that when the participants come in through the PSB entry door one of us merely redirect them to the Medicine Lake Conference Room where the training will be conducted.

The May 26th training will be held at Fire Station 1, 13205 County Road 6, Plymouth, MN 55441. (See email below). Special parking instructions will have to be communicated along with the change of locations.  I will be going with Steve Marti to Fire Station 1 ahead of the training to set up the AV.

Russ Carlson

We had a great presentation to the Plymouth City Counsel where our Heart Safe Committee gave the City the Automatic Electronic Defibrillators. They will be used in the new City Center.

Pictured below in center is Russ Carlson, leader of the Rotary Club of Plymouth’s Heart Safe Program. On his left is Kari Hemp, Recreation Manager for the City of Plymouth.
On his right is the Mayor of Plymouth, Jeff Wosje. Surrounding the group are participating Rotarians. Heart Safe Plymouth has trained over 6,700 people in both CPR and AED utilization.

CPR Training

On a Monday night, Russ, Norm, Steve M. and Steve B. trained 35 boy scouts and parents at St. Phillips the Deacon Church in Plymouth.  They received a donation to Heart Safe Foundation as well. This is a rocking Team!!! There are various trainings coming up in our Heart Safe Program. Russ indicated that there will probably be room for our new members to attend and gain the training along side the members of the public and assist the fellow Rotarians who are putting on the training as well. The next Saturday trainings are March 19. The next week day trainings are March 17.  If you are interested you can join them.

Be a HEARTSAFE SUPER HERO too (like Russ, Norm, Steve M, Steve B, Don,  and a few others in our club!)
Take the training and then help train others!

On March 10, 2022 we were grateful to hear from Paul Mendoza about how he became a dealer for AEDs for Medtronics and then more vendors as well as the growth of the industry and his career generally. It was a great presentation. We may have more in our next Bulletin when I am back from vacation.

On March 3, 2022 we were grateful to hear from Postmaster Johnson.

Congratulations to Peter. This first appeared here and then was picked up and published by the Sun Sailor. Great journalistic Success Peter!

DELIVERING FOR AMERICA…
THE NEW PONY EXPRESS!
“Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds;” and Minneapolis Postmaster Kenneth Johnson II eloquently articulated the challenging present and balanced approach to a revitalizing future for the delivery of mail and packages to the residents and businesses of Plymouth and beyond at the February 24th Rotary Club of Plymouth weekly meeting.
Postmaster Miller has been a member of the USPS for twenty-two years, and has witnessed a multitude of challenges over the last two decades:  a dire financial status, a shift in demand from mail to packages, an underperforming air and surface transportation network, prolonged underinvestment in retail and delivery networks,  a high turnover rate within the non-career workforce, unattainable first-class mail service standards, onerous legislative and administrative mandates, and the adverse impact of COVID-19.
The good news: help is on the way.  New legislation, which passed the House of Representatives overwhelmingly, and is expected to clear the Senate by next week, will greatly enhance the USPS’s ability to achieve financial sustainability and service excellence.  Components of the new legislation include elimination of the requirement that the USPS prefund retiree health benefits, the ability to negotiate contracts with local governments to provide capabilities like licenses for hunting, fishing and driving, and investment in package-sorting equipment, delivery vehicles, technology, and retail locations and facility buildings. The projected financial impact of the ten-year plan is immense:  $91 billion in operating expense reductions and $68 billion dollars in revenue improvement.
Postmaster Miller is optimistic about the future of the USPS: “The Pandemic showed how valuable the Postal Service is:  free Covid test kits delivered in a timely manner, essential package delivery maintained, and the mail continued to be conveyed.”
The Postal Service is being reconfigured as first-class mail amounts decline and package volumes increase as a result of e-commerce and social distancing.  Out with the old, as the “new” Pony Express rides again.

TALKING POINTS:

What is Rotary and WHY WOULD ANYONE CARE?
Rotary is a philanthropic organization that has a core group of committed volunteers in nearly every developed city in the world, who work to make their community a better place.
Here are 3 reasons for your friends to care:
  1. If you have moved here from somewhere else, and you join a local club, you can plan and do projects involving friends locally with those from anywhere you came from.
  2. Or for another example, when your local food shelf needs something, or someone, who can they ask and where do volunteers come from? Rotary Clubs supply money and volunteers for all sorts of our community charities.
  3. Rotary tries to measure everything with its four-way test. 1) Is it the truth? 2) Is it fair to all concerned? 3) Will it build good will and better friendships? 4) Will it be beneficial to all concerned? If something fails in any of those dimensions, it does not meet Rotary’s high-quality standards. We have been honored and welcomed to join.

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY
The Object of Rotary is to encourage
and foster the ideal of service as a
basis of worthy enterprise and, in
particular, to encourage and foster:
First The development of
acquaintance as an opportunity for
service;
Second High ethical standards
in business and professions, the
recognition of the worthiness
of all useful occupations, and
the dignifying of each Rotarian's
occupation as an opportunity to
serve society;
Third The application of the ideal of
service in each Rotarian's personal,
business, and community life;
Fourth The advancement of
international understanding,
goodwill, and peace through a
world fellowship of business and
professional persons united in the
ideal of service.

Our application and materials are in for Javier! We will know about our latest hurdle soon and that is when it is all funded! This is a fantastic opportunity for us to interact with the British Rotary Club, Javier as he goes through his latest level of higher education, and the district committee as they finalize the funding of the grant. Carol has led us through a difficult process to a great result. Many thanks to Carol.

If you are receiving this Bulletin and you are no longer a member, or never were a member, the reason it is coming to you is that we want you to consider becoming a member now. We want you in our club. If no one has personally said it recently, consider this your invitation to come as soon as you can. You are important to us.

Carol would like to build a schedule to deliver donated flowers to assisted living and nursing homes. Flowers are available Thursdays at 8:30 am at Trader Joe's, 11220 Wayzata Blvd. (Hopkins Crossroads and 394).  Email Carol Parrish  cjparrish1029@msn.com
