Stay Healthy and help each other if only a phone call

People of Action helps define Rotary for those who don’t know us. We’re professional, community, and civic leaders who connect with each other and who share a unique perspective and passion for taking action to improve the world. Describing and showing ourselves as people of action creates a personal connection to the organization and emphasizes the impact Rotary makes in our communities.

The 2019-2020 year is very quickly going to come to an end in a way that none of us could have ever imagined.  That will bring the 2020-2021 year and a lot of hope for a great year.  Our incoming president, Mary, has the energy and heart to continue the Plymouth Rotary as the great service organization it is.  However, she needs help!!!  She needs members to step up and be part of her Board of Directors.  Please reach out to Mary if you have questions and interest.

Public Service Announcement (PSA) campaign has launched in the U.S.

Keep an eye (and ear!) out for Rotary ads on TV, radio, and in print that show our members as People of Action. The campaign aims to build awareness and understanding of Rotary, and highlight the commitment we have to making a difference in communities around the world.   The PSA’s have received significant distribution already – with more than $2.6M in donated media value since the launch in March.  Visit the People of Action Toolkits page on the Brand Center to view the materials that have been shared with media outlets nationwide.

To make sure your community is involved in the campaign, contact the PSA Directors at your local media outlets and ask them to take action by including our Rotary public service announcements in their programming.

Polio Update from Tim Mulcrone, Your District 5950 Polio Chair for eight years

Polio!  How can I talk of polio in the midst of the CoVid crisis?!  Much of what we are experiencing now is what it was once like in the days before there was a polio vaccine. This continues to be a good reason to usher polio out of existence. But we do have CoVid to deal with.

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative, of which Rotary is a partner, has focused its incredible disease surveillance machine to monitor CoVid.  This expansive network is the result of 30+ years of Rotary Polio Eradication efforts that created health care initiatives in areas of the world that never had it. This, indeed, illustrates the “Plus” in Polio Plus.

As Rotarians, we hunger to find ways to help in any crisis.  I’m pleased to know that our District gave $100,000 in District Designated Funds to two CoVid related initiatives. This is money that Rotarians gave to The Rotary Foundation three years ago.

As we seek ways to serve others in the world, it’s nice to know that we were ready to respond so quickly to CoVid because of our past commitment to Polio Plus and Annual Programs of The Rotary Foundation.

We are nearing the end of our Rotary Year which is when many of our Clubs make their Polio Eradication contributions from whatever fundraising they have done during the year.  Many Clubs have contributed already. The ask, as you may recall, is $1500 per Club. Funds must be received by June 30th to count for this year.  These dollars go immediately to work and that work is now supporting the fight against CoVid.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation still matches Rotary contributions 2 to 1 up to $50 million!  Additionally, our District is matching any increase over last year that a Club contributes to Polio (up to $30K of DDF).  AND we again have an anonymous donor match!  You can’t beat Rotary for its leveraging and impact. Let’s not leave any of that money on the table!

As of this writing, there have been 60 new wild polio cases this year. These have been in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Thank you to those who have met the request. For those who are still working on it, here is the link to the PDF contribution form. Remember to check the box for Polio.

Thank you for your service in Rotary.   If you need anything related to Polio Eradication, please give me a call.
