Club Happenings despite the times.....

Plymouth MN Rotary is in action!  Rotary Member, Steve Beachler, delivered art supplies and boxes of ice cream for residents (and staff) at Brookdale Senior Living on Friday!  Happy Easter.

"You can't believe how much we appreciate this!", says Mission Nursing Home Administrator, Rich Feeney, as Plymouth MN Rotary delivered an iPad for residents to use.  Per CDC guidelines and Minnesota's Stay-at-home order, visitors are not allowed to visit friends and family at nursing and retirement homes due to COVID-19.  Plymouth MN Rotary provided another iPad to residents at Cherrywood Pointe in Plymouth. Pictured is Peter Bartling, Carol Parrish, Kevin Remde, Mary Chirstensen, Donna Evjen, Rich Feeney and Linda O'Brien.

"Thank you SO much for the call today....I must say, Carol, we had some leaky eyes." Email from Cherrywood Pointe's Shelly Howard to Rotary's Carol Parrish.  Plymouth MN Rotary provided two iPads to Mission Nursing Home and Cherrywood Pointe in Plymouth to allow residents to keep in touch with family and friends. With CDC guidelines and the state's Stay-At-Home order due to COVID-19, this Rotary action, "Connects The World!"

Message from our Rotary Club of Plymouth Co-Presidents:

Dear Colleagues,

James joins with me in wishing you and your family members good health and welling being during these most turbulent of times.

This morning, as you all probably know by now from Jim Crenna’s memo, the Brew Fest Committee met by telephone conference call and determined that it was appropriate to end preparations for this year’s fund raiser and reschedule for 2021. Many great ideas were generated from this session, one of which is worth passing on now: Jim Crenna verbalized the concept of an outdoor venue like the Hilde Amphitheater or the Plymouth Creek Wedding Chapel. These locations offer the best of outdoor options, while eliminating the possibility of inadequate social distancing from inside facilities, and could/should be considered as viable alternatives at a later date.

The Committee also requested that all contributors continue to donate their funds, some of which would be allocated to food shelves and senior living facilities, to help those most in need: the financially impaired and the aged. We are getting through life, and as healthy and able Rotarians, we want others to be able to get into life.

A special thank you to Henry Wang for his leadership on the Chinese-American Committee, who generously donated medical supplies to West Health, to Carol Parish for her leadership on the Flower Donations to our beloved Senior Citizens, and to Kevin Remde and Carol Parish for their combined leadership on technological communications donations to senior living facilities.

The Plymouth Rotary Club, even in this period of adversity, continues to manifest its living, breathing motto of “Service Above Self-“ which right now translates as conserve and perpetuate, transform and enhance. During these troubled times, The Plymouth Rotary Club, and other organizations like ours, truly represent “The Health of the State.” Bravo!

We are always better together!

And… we are truly thankful for each and every one of you!

James and Peter

Membership Recruitment:
At the December 12, 2019, Board meeting the Board had a lengthy discussion on membership and the need to engage the current membership in recruiting new members.  Based on this discussion, the Board approved a new program:  If a current member recruits a new member and that member signs on for a full pay membership the current member will receive a one quarter waiver on dues.  The definition of a full pay member is a member that pays dues and meals on a quarterly basis, not pay-as-you go.    If you have questions, please ask either James or Peter.

Dear District 5950 Rotarians:

Our response for COVID-19 relief:

We heard your call for our district to help the international community respond to the COVID-19 Crisis.  Last night District 5950's Rotary Foundation Committee authorized:

$75,000 of District 5950's Global DDF to the ITALIAN ROTARIANS RESPONSE TO COVID-19 grant; and
$25,000 of District 5950's Global DDF to the ROTARY INTERNATIONAL DISASTER RESPONSE FUND.

For our newer members, a brief summary of how our grant funds are allocated:

Because of the outstanding historical generosity of the members of our district to The Rotary Foundation (TRF), we have about $400,000 distributed (after three years) to the district each year for grants initiated by our clubs.  Half of this fund (about $200,000) is designated for projects that benefit our LOCAL communities, and the other half is restricted by TRF for GLOBAL projects.  Each year we spend all of the LOCAL funds (which we will accomplish this year) and, in many years, like this year, we have excess GLOBAL funds as a carryover into the next year's fund.

After careful review of our outstanding grant requests, it was determined that our district would have excess GLOBAL funds to carry forward to our next fiscal year, and that the above grants, along with the $30,000 previously committed to Polio Plus, would not conflict with GLOBAL projects the district clubs would likely bring forward over the next 15 month grant cycle.  The above grants in no way affect the funds we have available for LOCAL projects in the next Rotary year.  We know you would rather have these excess GLOBAL funds providing relief today than sitting in the bank as excess.

Our designated COVID-19 grants:

Italian Response Fund - Italy is presenting an unusually tough environment for the crisis.  Rotary International's Global Grant efforts in Italy include working with the 13 Rotary Districts in-country to support medical professionals dealing with the Coronavirus there.  Our funding will be used to purchase the following badly needed additional medical equipment:

Full body thermal scanners,COVID-19 triage units, including isolation “cabins”, computer tablets and related tele-medicine software and monitors; and Isolation stretchers to allow transport of patients without physical contact with any health care professionals.

Disaster Response Fund - The Rotary Foundation Trustees recently placed $1 million in its Disaster Response Fund to make grants immediately available for applications related to COVID-19.  Our District's contribution supports grants that help Rotarians shore up the medical capabilities of their communities in all parts of the world, including hot spots in the United States.

Don't forget The Rotary Foundation in your personal generosity:

This is also a reminder to all of us of the need to individually support The Rotary Foundation with online gifts before our fiscal year end (June 30, 2020).  It would be great to have the financial support of every member of every club, in any amount, to bring to them the value of personal fulfillment created by our collective generosity.   It is our sharing today that will provide the funds for club and district grants in three years for new local and global challenges.  Just go to Rotary.org to give.

Don't forget to act locally as well:

Meanwhile, we are very proud of all the efforts the clubs in our district are making in support of our local community food shelf and medical facilities.  Keep up that great work, People of Action!

Sincerely,

District Governor Russ Michaletz,
District Governor-Elect Tom Gump and
District Rotary Foundation Chair Carol MacDonald

Re: GMS now Online

Due to the restrictions of person to person contact to limit the spread of the Coronavirus the previously scheduled Grant Management Seminars (GMS) have been moved online. Because of time restraints we are sending registration information to all District 5950 Rotarians. This unusual mass emailing is due to the fact the many clubs have restricted or canceled regular meetings. We want to train as many Rotarians as possible before the beginning of the next year starting July 1, 2020. Each club should have at least one member trained to qualify for matching funds.

There is no cost to participate. Please review the new updated schedule below. The pathway to register on the district website (www.district5950.org) can be found under the schedule grid.

If you have registered for any of the upcoming dates your registration remains in effect. Note the changes in start times and/or duration. An addition session has been added in the middle of May replacing the earlier canceled event. Each session has a limit of 20 participants.

All clubs must have one trained member in order to obtain matching funds for local and/or Global projects. This training provides the tools to do just that. Your club may leverage its dollars by a factor of  3 ½ to 7 times or more.

Two refresher sessions are offered to individuals who have been trained in the past two years. Complete sessions are open to all Rotarians. Your club can register multiple participants at no additional cost.

Message from Gary C.K. Huang
Chair, The Rotary Foundation 2019-2020:

We are coming together to face a new test of our collective strength during the COVID-19 pandemic. Rotary districts around the world are applying for Rotary’s disaster response grants in record numbers to empower Rotarians who are actively finding solutions and making a difference in their local communities. But we need your help.

Because of this global need, The Rotary Foundation Trustees have increased the amount available for these grants from $1 million to $3 million. That’s in addition to the generous contributions from donors to our disaster response fund over the last week. The outpouring of support is inspiring, but the demand will continue to grow, and we currently do not have enough funds to support the substantial amount of grant applications we are currently receiving from districts around the world. Your donation will help keep funds available as even more needs arise.

These grants are already making an impact. They are supplying hospitals in Belgium, Croatia, and Italy with lifesaving ventilators. They’re equipping frontline health care workers in Korea, Nigeria, the Philippines, Spain, and the United States  with desperately needed personal protective equipment so they can care for patients safely. In India, disaster response grants are also improving conditions for patients and caregivers by bringing disinfectant sprayers, beds, and mattresses to health care facilities.

In the midst of such difficult and uncertain times, Rotary members around the world persevere. You can empower them in their service to others by making a gift to the Disaster Response Fund.

No challenge is so big that we can’t make a difference. As we unite in response to urgent and emerging community needs, we will keep working to fight the spread of this virus and save lives.

Thank you again for your unwavering commitment to Doing Good in the World.

Sincerely,

Rotary International Membership Chair Video:

On March 6, 2020, the listed Rotary International club Membership Chairs held a video conference on membership. We recorded the webinar and a link sent to all the Membership Chairs which could not attend. I hope you or your club had an opportunity to review the material. The one-hour video not only contains an update of our membership numbers and our lead program, but also in their own words how the top four clubs increase their membership in only a few months. The membership chairs also received templates of club documents and outlines of different membership models used by these top clubs. The information provided in the video and documents will lead your club to a successful membership campaign if you put it into action.  Let’s end the year with a bang.

Please review this link and ask your Membership Chairs about the documents.
